About Target, Genes, and Variants

Representing the purpose or goal of a particular set of work

A target in the LIMS is the organizational tool which allows the user to represent the purpose or goal of a particular set of work - this can be either a Gene, a Material, or Both. When registering a target, the user can enter a name and description, any number of projects to be associated with, and a Gene, variant (subset of Gene, described below), and Material. Either a Gene or Material is required for registration, but the user can select both if desired.

On the target details page, any user may tag, attach or comment on the target as needed, as well as add new or remove existing targeted materials.

To register a new gene, the system requires an ID for reference. The details page of a gene allows the user to register new variants, entering the species and DNA/AA sequence of the variant. Each Gene can contain only one variant per species registered.
